Medical Lab Careers
Pursue a Medical Laboratory Technology degree through the MLT Collaborative Program. Attend professional courses online through the accredited MLT program at Darton College and complete laboratory course requirements on-campus or at Armstrong Atlantic State University, Georgia Highlands College, Waycross College or hospital/clinic collaborations.

Laboratory professionals are the detectives of the health care world. They search for clues to help in the diagnosis and treatment of disease or injury, and help patients to stay healthy as well.

ASCP National Board Exams

Darton College's MLT Program four-year averages exceed the national average on the ASCP National Board Exams.

National surveys predict increased demand nationally for qualified medical laboratory technicians. Medical Laboratory Technology is ranked fourth in the health care/medical jobs category based on environment, income, outlook, physical demand, security and stress.

Stephanie Beauregard, a December 2004 graduate of the Darton Medical Laboratory Technology Collaborative Program with Georgia Highlands College, obtained the highest score on the ASCP National Board Exam of any program graduate in the MLT program's thirty-year history.  The student scored in excess of 800 points on an exam requiring 400 as a minimum to pass.

Program Description

Darton's Medical Laboratory Technology Collaborative program prepares graduates to practice as a laboratory technician in hospitals, clinics, physicians' offices, and other health care facilities. Graduates are eligible for the national certifying exams.

Program Goals

  • Provide students with a broad educational background utilizing a variety of resources and experiences.
  • Provide undergraduate MLT curriculum based on current needs.
  • Develop the students' professional attitudes and ethics required by the laboratory profession.
  • Educate the students in the merits of continuing education.
  • Provide regional need for Medical Laboratory Technicians who can function at career entry levels and assume their role as health care professionals.

About the MLT Collaborative
The MLT Collaborative Program is administered through Darton College, in collaboration with Armstrong Atlantic State University,
Georgia Highlands College, and Waycross College and hospital/clinical affiliates. The Collaborative provides professional coursework through online classes while allowing students to complete lab classes and core course requirements on any of the five campuses. Students must apply for admission to the program through Darton College.

Clinical Assignments
The MLT program provides clinical training opportunities for students with many hospitals and clinics in Southwest Georgia. A suitable clinical training facility in your local area may be negotiated with the program director pending availability of a qualifying site. Clinical assignments are made by the program faculty with approved affiliates. Students must be prepared to travel to the clinical training facility.

**Service-cancelable loans are available to qualified individuals who complete college training in areas identified as "critical need". After completion of training, students may either (1) work in Georgia in the "critical need" field for a designated number of years and have the debt cancelled or (2) repay the loan plus interest.
